So we should all know by now that E2 partnered with Metagravity to run their multiplayer engine. Metagravity is working on several games that are trying to be truly MASSIVE online games, one being Edge of Chaos which is still in development, but they did release a small little mini game for now called Edge of Chaos: Dungeons which is in early access.
I wanted to give this little game a shot to see if i can start to further understand Metagravity’s goals. I looked up the game and to my surprise, the game is essential run directly on their website. You don’t have to download anything, you just go to the webpage and the game starts.
This made me start to think that this is going to be exactly how E2 operates as well. We wont ever be downloading a game called E2 onto our PCs. We will just go to the E2 “website” and the entire game will operate directly on the site. I don’t know for certain if this is how it will be but I’m starting to really believe it is.
Its an interesting road we are heading down. It almost feels like we have gone full circle since the early 2000s. Remember when websites like addictinggames.com were super popular? Game sites like that sorta died out because you could only do so much with a game being run off a website back then. Now with the rise of online servers, cloud computing, and just the general capability of hardware these days, it seems like website gaming is going to come back around full swing. We are gonna start seeing full blown complex games running entirely on websites without any need to download anything. THIS is the concept of web3. Websites will no longer just be 2d text and images. Those will still exist, but more and more sites are going to start developing 3d spaces for their sites. Many might even make their 3d spaces for their website, through E2.
Its an exciting time. The closer we get to this the more it all starts to make sense. Think of a company like Nike. Lets say they want to make a 3d site for themselves where people can go into a giant 3d store and order whatever Nike products they want. That site would be their standard Nike.com site. They COULD hire a bunch of devs, invest in large servers which is very pricey, and just make their own 3d website they have to manage everything for. OR, if they don’t want to spend all that money on the severs etc which is a lot, they can just buy property in E2. The small investment will give them access to a bunch of tools to develop their own space within e2. Now, you may think a company like Nike wouldn’t want to restrict themselves to a singular platform like E2. But that is misunderstanding of how this will all work. When this 3D site is made insite E2, people will still just go to Nike.com. They will not have to go e2 platform first. People will just go to Nike.com and what will load up is the E2 3d space. Many people probably wont even realize they entered an E2 property. Its all going to be a seemless, open system were everything is accessible from anywhere.
